New program for schools
to talk about the river issues
The future of rivers is the future of life!
Yet rivers are under serious threat from climate change and human activity. Understanding them better is one of the keys to preserving them.
Are you a teacher, school principal or education officer? Are you interested in rivers and would like to make them a priority with your pupils/children from the start of the 2025 school year?

For several months now, and in response to various requests from teachers, our association Initiatives for the Future of Great Rivers (IFGR) has been working, in partnership with volunteer teachers, on a new educational program on rivers and ecosystems, aimed at primary school pupils. Many resources already exist, but they are sometimes little-known and/or poorly referenced. And they don’t always meet teachers’ needs.
With the “Adopt your river” program, IFGR offers support to teachers, ESD referents or any other person in charge, by pairing up classes working on the subject of rivers. IAGF will act as an intermediary between the teachers interested in twinning, by setting up the pairs (according to the wishes and constraints of each).
It’s possible to set up twinnings between classes in neighboring communes on the same river, classes in the same watershed (one upstream and the other downstream), geographically distant classes discussing their local watercourse, or even two international classes.
To support this program, we’re making available an educational kit entitled “Challenges of the Rivers”. Les Défis des fleuves” are educational activity sheets for teachers and their students, covering all the issues and knowledge in a fun way. They will be made available free of charge to teachers enrolled in the program, to guide and help them set up meetings and discussions between pupils. The challenges can be used as a basis for dialogue on the subject of water and rivers.
