Integrated Water Resources Management in the Mono River Basin in Togo – IWRM Mono
Toutes les initiativesLaunched in 2022 by Experts Solidaires, the GIRE Mono project (2022-2025) in the Yoto prefecture of the Maritime region is the first operational IWRM project in Togo, based on a local territorial approach that is as inclusive as possible. Its objective is to improve local water governance, which is one of the pillars of the intervention, through institutional meetings between the municipalities of Yoto and the mobilization of water users around participatory monitoring tools, for better knowledge and management of their water resources. It also aims to promote resource protection techniques, in particular through reforestation activities in buffer zones along the Mono River, the promotion of agroecological techniques, and improved access to drinking water and sanitation services.
Phase I (2022-2025) laid the foundations for local water management between the three municipalities of Yoto.
Phase II of the Mono IWRM project (2025-2027) aims to build on the initial lessons learned and actions taken in Phase I. It is part of the ongoing SDAGE (Water Management and Development Master Plan) and seeks to address, at the local level, inter-municipal strategies tailored to the municipalities of Yoto. In addition, the project also plans to broaden the framework for collaboration and sharing of different experiences in terms of IWRM at the Mono Basin level, particularly with Beninese stakeholders, through the Mono Basin Agency, in order to create a framework for sustainable consultation.
