Memory of the Mono River
Toutes les initiativesThe Mono River Memory initiative is being implemented in the Mono River basin. Straddling the territories of Benin and Togo, the basin experiences significant flooding during the rainy season, which has a major impact on the daily lives of the populations living there. Over generations, each community living around the basin has developed a range of endogenous practices for adaptation and resilience to flooding. One of the most common practices in the southern part of the watershed is the planting of mangroves (Rhizophora Racemosa) along the river to limit the impact of flooding. Eco-Benin is helping to promote this practice through its activities.
This initiative, led by Benin Ecotourism Concern (Eco-Benin), is therefore a continuation of its outreach efforts and aims to promote and share endogenous flood adaptation techniques among the various communities living around the river, namely the Xwla, Pédah, Mina, Adja, Kotafon, Ouatchi, and Sahouè. The first step will be to compile an inventory of the various endogenous flood adaptation practices along the Mono River in the areas of agriculture, crafts, and housing infrastructure. A study will therefore be conducted on endogenous adaptation practices in response to flooding. A guide describing endogenous practices for adapting to flooding will be published in 100 copies.
Then, experiences will be shared through traveling exhibitions.
