Program to strengthen women's capacity in watercourse management for the protection of the Yellow River

Toutes les initiatives

The Yellow River faces persistent environmental problems such as soil erosion, water pollution, and fragile ecosystems. While China’s River Chief System has strengthened governance, community involvement, particularly through Women River Stewardship, plays a crucial complementary role. These women participate in river inspection, pollution control, and ecological restoration, despite obstacles such as lack of technical training and gender discrimination.

To address these challenges, the Women River Stewardship Capacity Building Action Plan (2022–2026) was launched by the North China University of Water and Electricity, with support from the Asian Development Bank and women’s federations. This plan aims to:

  • Create an integrated platform for teaching, research, and consulting;
  • Develop training and awareness programs;
  • Encourage community participation, especially among women;
  • Promote a “local to global” model combining community support, academic expertise, women’s leadership, and public engagement.
