Restoration of the sediment dynamics of the Garonne River in Occitanie
Toutes les initiativesThe objective of the initiative led by the Garonne Study and Management Joint Syndicate is to implement actions related to the hydromorphology of the Garonne River, aiming to restore a functional ecological balance that is connected to the surrounding aquatic ecosystems. These aquatic ecosystems play a crucial role in regulating water resources, facilitating groundwater recharge, natural filtration, and the distribution of fresher water to downstream rivers. They also contribute to flood protection by absorbing excess water during heavy rains or floods, thus limiting damage to populated areas. To facilitate the implementation of these actions, we need to launch communication, awareness-raising, and training campaigns for the various stakeholders involved in our working group, particularly those professions (such as quarry operators, hydroelectric power plant managers, and farmers) whose activities impact the ecological state of the Garonne river corridor. It is important that all stakeholders share a common understanding of the history of our watershed’s evolution and the human pressures that have affected the river. For this, effective communication and public education are essential. The communication plan will aim to enhance the knowledge and skills of all participating stakeholders.
