Living with the Rusizi and Tanganyika rivers: risk prevention, ecotourism, and sustainable coexistence in Gatumba

Toutes les initiatives

The project aims to reconnect the communities living along the Gatumba to the Rusizi River and Lake Tanganyika through an integrated approach combining risk prevention, environmental education, and the development of sustainable ecotourism activities. It responds to a territorial emergency caused by recurrent flooding and human-wildlife conflicts (particularly with hippopotamuses), while promoting one of the world’s richest lake ecosystems.

The initiative includes awareness campaigns, solar-powered canoe tours, light accommodation (glamping), the creation of green jobs for young people, and training for nature guides. It is part of a participatory local governance framework, in line with local commitments to protect Lake Tanganyika.

It builds on the actions carried out by Visit Burundi in the areas of tourism promotion, community engagement, and ecological diplomacy.

It aims to make Gatumba a regional model of territorial resilience, responsible tourism, and human-biodiversity coexistence.
