Preserving the Ban River from siltation and pollution to ensure the sustainability of its ecosystem services and the livelihoods of the Danané population

Toutes les initiatives

The aim is to improve the river ecosystem by protecting it from silting and pollution through mechanical and biological anti-erosion measures, with the restoration of the endangered species Heterobranchus longifilis. This project, led by Danané Aquaculture Simplified Cooperative Society, also aims to strengthen the professional capacities of local populations by creating income-generating activities through a participatory approach. The river offers visitors and the local population a spectacular panoramic view and is home to a diverse range of vegetation (more than a dozen plant formations and endemic species). Preserving the river is essential for both its economic and ecological role. Several factors are currently contributing to the decline in biodiversity in this river, including agricultural, pastoral, and fishing activities. The specific objectives are as follows: to protect the biological and landscape biodiversity of the river, to reduce anthropogenic pressure on natural resources, and to implement strategies to sustain the project’s achievements. Actions will include supporting fish farmers in producing fish in tanks, ponds, and tarpaulins, building spreading thresholds to reduce the high concentration of cattle herds near the river, and promoting a no-till farming system to prevent erosion.
