Protection of the Loufoulakari River in Yalavounga

Toutes les initiatives

The initiative led by the MAHAYANA association aims to sustainably protect the Loufoulakari River, located in the Pool department, about 75 km from Brazzaville, at the border between the districts of Kinkala and Louingui, and nearly 10 km from the city of Kinkala. This river is an essential resource for the local populations who use it for domestic needs, market gardening and other daily activities.

Faced with the growing pressure on this resource, the MAHAYANA association is implementing an initiative aimed at promoting sustainable and participatory management of the river and its ecosystems. The first actions have already started in Yalavounga with the identification of the river and its sensitive areas, as well as exchanges with local authorities for the official presentation of the project.

The planned activities include raising awareness among local communities about protecting the river, and setting up two community wash-houses to avoid washing clothes directly in the water, the training of market garden groups in compost production and water-saving agricultural techniques, as well as the delimitation of different river use areas.

Through these actions, the project will contribute to improving water quality, preserving aquatic ecosystems and strengthening the involvement of local communities in the protection
