IFGR session no. 3: Deltas

Third international session of the IFGR panel – from 11 to 14 October 2016, at Avignon.
Session theme: Deltas.

For this session, IFGR gathered its international and multidisciplinary panel in Avignon from 11 to 14 October 2016, on the theme of deltas. Following on from Lyon in October 2015 and Montreal in April 2016, the choice of this other key city of the Rhone Valley gave the opportunity to study the Camargue region, and then expand the debate to other delta regions around the world.

The deltas of great rivers

These regions known for the wealth of their ecosystems have been forged gradually from fragile balances between human settlements, developments and environmental preservation. Their populations stand at the front line of the challenges facing our world: pollution, rising sea levels, food security, urban development, among others…

How can these paradoxical regions composed by nature, man and paradoxes point to concrete solutions for a more sustainable world?

Regarding these points, IFGR intervened during the COP22, held in Marrakech from 7 to 18 November, to show once again that the river is an indispensable component in the response to climate change.

This session gave led to drafting a plea in favour of deltas.
