Depollution of the Garonne into macrowaste

Toutes les initiatives

This project is supported by “Plastic Vortex.” The plastification of oceans is a contemporary marker of the negative impact of
human lives on the environment. Today, 2.5 million tons of plastics of which
50% are disposable products with a lifespan of less than three years, ending in
the oceans every year. 80% of this ocean pollution comes from cities and is
disseminated by waterways. Without an effective and rapid response, we will find more
plastic as many fish in the oceans in 2050.
Faced with this global scourge, Plastic Vortex, a mission-driven company, has developed and installed in
September 2025, a first floating dam in the Garonne at Toulouse, intended for
collect more than 80% of the floating macrowaste of 1 mm and more (plastic bottles and
glass, cans, cigarette butts, polystyrene beads, and many other types of waste).
The patented system has two unique features: it allows collection
automatic waste disposal without intervening on the river and works even during periods of
Believed. This is a world first.
But Plastic Vortex goes further. The company systematically characterizes
waste collected in the Garonne in order to obtain scientific data that can
to be passed on to communities and research centers. This is the first time a
such an initiative is taken. This will allow for precise knowledge of the level of
pollution of the Garonne.
Plastic Vortex also organizes awareness-raising activities for stakeholders in the
territory directly on the dam site to make a mark.
