Pilot community co-construction initiative for the sustainable rehabilitation and participatory governance of the Black River in southern Benin
Toutes les initiativesThe Yélian Association is leading a community co-construction initiative for the sustainable rehabilitation and participatory governance of the Black River in southern Benin.
The 85 km river crosses several municipalities before flowing into the lagoon of Porto-Novo and is subject to increasing pressures: sediment filling, plant proliferation, pollution and erosion.
It directly supports 15,000 to 25,000 people and indirectly up to 120,000 individuals.
The river has a heritage, cultural and spiritual value, considered as a sacred river, integrating endogenous knowledge and traditional practices.
The project involves local populations in sustainable planning and management, including their financial contribution to ensure ownership and sustainability.
It combines technical and environmental diagnosis, socioeconomic and cultural analysis and co-construction of solutions adapted to local needs.
The initiative promotes awareness, environmental education and strengthens social cohesion while reducing human pressures.
This approach constitutes a reproducible pilot model reconciling ecological restoration, water security and local development.
It provides a solid scientific basis for integrated and sustainable actions and illustrates that participatory and community-based management is an effective way to restore ecosystems.
