CLEAN HOUSEHOLD ENVIRONMENT FOR HEALTHY CHILDREN’S HEALTH

This project is led by “Initiative Citoyenne Développement Congo” and aims to restore the ecosystem of the 3 rivers (Lukuga, Kituku and Lubuye) in the commune of Lukuga in Kalemie by cleaning its bed, waste management, and limiting anarchic constructions on the hills. It aims to mitigate the flooding of Lake Tanganyika, prevent water-borne diseases and protect infrastructure, especially the neighborhoods surrounding these rivers.  The project’s objectives are: (i) to carry out the sanitation of the premises by cleaning and clearing these three rivers to increase its drainage capacity (ii) Sustainable management by controlling soil erosion on the surrounding hills to reduce siltation and the transformation of toxic and non-toxic waste, both solid and liquid.(iii) Protection through the implementation of protective infrastructure (retaining wall) against rising lake water levels and (iv) Awareness-raising through education of local populations on waste management and the risks associated with uncontrolled urbanization.

The expected benefits of this project are: (i) Reduction of water pollution and improvement of public health, (ii) Securing of residential areas (iii) Revival of the local economy by preventing the desertion of commercial areas near the river
