Madimba Mao-Tributaries of the Congo in the heart of the communities: Restore Luwa, Kibuma, and Bimbondo
Toutes les initiativesIn Madimba Mao, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the rivers Luwa, Kibuma and Bimbondo are vital sources for agriculture, domestic water and local biodiversity. These three tributaries feed the N’djili river, which then flows into the Congo River, the second most powerful river in the world.
Faced with the deforestation of riverbanks, erosion and degradation of water quality, the initiative led by DONESPLANET acts at the local level to protect these strategic tributaries of the Congo Basin.
The project combines ecological restoration of riverbanks, riparian agroecology, community governance and community outreach. It provides for the planting of 12,000 trees, the establishment of local river management committees and participatory monitoring of water quality.
By recreating the link between populations and their rivers, the initiative demonstrates that the protection of large rivers begins with action on their small tributaries.
Madimba Mao thus becomes a rural model of sustainable coexistence between communities, agriculture and river ecosystems.
