Itaipu Binacional: a cumulated output of 2.5 billion MWh

Located on the River Parana, between Brazil and Paraguay, the Itaipu Binacional hydropower plant is the largest source of renewable energy in the world. With an installed capacity of 14,000 MW, it covers 17% of Brazil’s electricity needs and 76% of Paraguay’s.

At the end of 2017, the structure reached an important milestone in its history, with the cumulated output of 2.5 billion MWh since it was commissioned in 1984!

One of the new challenges is to make navigation on the river possible by installing crossing infrastructures next to the dam.To this end, James Spalding, Paraguayan Managing Director of Itaipu Binacional and Elisabeth Ayrault, CEO of CNR, signed last November a protocol of study including exchange of knowledge and experience in the river engineering area.
