The Sapopema, which IFGR met during its mission to Brazil (cf. headline article) is a non-governmental organisation whose mission is to promote scientific research, encourage sociopolitical training in view to conserving the environment, the sustainable management of natural resources and improving the quality of life of traditional peoples in the Amazon region. It also provides technical assistance to fishing communities and is active in different public policies (fishing agreements, access to water and drainage, management plans, etc.).

Brazil and Peru. Most of the Amazon basin is in Brazil while its source is in Peru. Therefore, we consider that these two countries clearly represent the River Amazon.

The Pirarucu, of course! This freshwater fish can weigh up to 300kg and measure up to 450 cm!  It is the giant of freshwater and therefore corresponds well to the River Amazon, a giant among rivers!

Brown. The waters of the River Amazon are muddy and remind one of milky coffee.

Lara, who is considered in Brazil as the goddess of water. It is an Amazonian legend that tells of the daughter of a shaman who changes herself into a fish-woman and seduces sailors.

The story of life, since life vibrates in the River Amazon. We can read the story of life in the Amazon.

A project of sustainable development. The River Amazon ensures the survival of many species and environments throughout its course. Thus, any project designed for the amazon must be based on sustainability.
