Hospital ship on the Mekong River in northern Laos

Led by the organization PEMM, this initiative improves access to health care and awareness in isolated communities of the Mekong, which are only accessible by river. Operational since 2022 aboard a chartered boat, these biennial medical missions have already treated thousands of residents, totaling 2,000 consultations in the year 2025 alone. The current objective is to sustain this regular mobile service through the acquisition of a dedicated hospital ship in order to intensify interventions. The project focuses on four main areas: providing care, detecting pathologies, training local medical staff and raising awareness among the population about hygiene rules and the protection of water resources from pollution, thus sustainably strengthening health and environmental practices related to the river.
